The Story

I am a Doctor of Physical Therapy and lover of movement.  I am fascinated by the resiliency and adaptability of the body, and by the intricate connection of physical movement to emotional and mental healing. Through different explorations of movement, whether it’s Brazilian Zouk, Chinese cultural dance, pole dance, running, yoga, strength training, kickboxing, or Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, I learn something about myself and life. The flow, freedom, and joy of moving my body with music while connecting with another human in Brazilian Zouk taught me communication and collaboration with each other through body language. Yoga taught me to connect mind, body, and breath with movement. Pole dance taught me to face fears, and that I’m stronger than I think. Dance has taught me how expression of what is inside impacts how I move through my daily world. It teaches me to listen to the music, notice how my body responds, and allow and accept the flow it creates.

As I pursue new movement modalities, I am no stranger to the body aches and growing pains of developing new movement patterns. However, sometimes it goes beyond growing pains to something less helpful. Recurring injuries develop or we contort our bodies in a way that we pay for later. The allure of pushing the body past its limit to execute beautiful dance sequences rather than trusting the wisdom and intuition of the body is an all too common occurrence on the dance floor.

Thus, Body Wisdom was born to balance the exhilaration of new physical challenges with respect and kindness to our bodies. My expertise in anatomy, kinesiology, and rehabilitation combined with my desire for longevity and health informs how I approach movement and dance.

In my clinical practice, I’ve worked with people of many demographics and walks of life. My experience working with varieties of populations has taught me that facilitation of learning new movements have to be individualized to each person. It is my goal with Body Wisdom to create a space that allows participants to feel safe to approach their bodies and movement with curiosity. I believe that movement is meant for all, and I understand it doesn’t always feel that way. Movement spaces are often catered to young, able bodied, people of majority cultures. I aim to teach Body Wisdom with inclusivity at the forefront, welcoming many perspectives. I want to co create our events to be one that celebrates and serves movement learning for all ages, physical abilities, BIPOC and queer people.  I approach working with people through a trauma sensitive lens, and lead with the knowledge that every person arrives with their own Body Wisdom. With an expansive toolbox of applied movement science, compassionate body awareness, and therapeutic exercise knowlege, I want to empower us all to sustainably pursue what we love.
